[VIDEO]: Nissan LEAF Brings Electric Cars to SimCity™

All-electric vehicles and Nissan-branded charging stations integrated into city-building strategy game

Nissan, in collaboration with Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: EA), is integrating the Nissan LEAF into the most recent edition of the popular city-building strategy game, SimCity™. Players are able to create EV-friendly cities by driving Nissan LEAF all-electric vehicles and installing up to five Nissan-branded charging stations throughout their cities free of charge.

With branded charging stations throughout the game, LEAF is the only electric vehicle currently in the game. As an incentive to develop charging infrastructure for EVs, buildings in a player’s city will experience a one-time wave of "happiness," a key reward mechanism in the game. Once the charging stations are installed, LEAF vehicles will begin populating the city, and players will be able to see the "EV smiles" on their Sims’ faces as they drive around town — similar to what real-life LEAF drivers experience when they get behind the wheel. Players can visit Nissan’s online calculator to see how LEAF "happiness" translates in real life savings through the Nissan website.

"Even virtual cities recognize that electric vehicles are the future of a sustainable mobile society, and Nissan is excited to start helping SimCity players make their cities more environmentally friendly by adding its zero-emission Nissan LEAF to the game," said Jon Brancheau, vice president, Marketing, Nissan North America, Inc. "Nissan remains committed to finding innovative ways to promote the development of EV infrastructure and to bringing practical, affordable electric vehicles to markets throughout the United States."

SimCity, the series that has entertained more than 30 million fans since its debut in 1989, is back and better than ever. It has sold more than 1.3 million copies since its return to PC this March, and the community will grow when the game debuts on the Mac® in June 2013. In the new SimCity everything is simulated intelligently, from all of the Sims in a city to every kilowatt of power pulsing through a region of cities. Delivering the most immersive and personal SimCity experience ever, players can create the cities of their imaginations.

Nissan Friend-ME Concept for a New Generation

Head-turning style for youth who clock mobility in kilobits per second
  • Response to dreams of young Chinese soon to be world's largest customer segment
  • Private-yet-connected space for peers makes just hanging out an adventure
  • Proof of Nissan's determination to lead the way in delivering Chinese customer aspirations

Nissan Friend-ME Concept for an New Generation

Nissan today revealed its Friend-Me concept, a four-passenger sedan designed for a generation with a very different automotive outlook. With an assertive, imposing exterior featuring boldly flowing sculpted lines, Friend-Me is a confident creature of the night, meant to be seen in bright city lights.

The concept is applicable globally, but the genesis of Friend-Me was Nissan's exploring the aspirations of customers destined to emerge as the world's largest single market segment: the "Bālínghòu," around 240 million Chinese born in the 1980s are known. Specifically, Friend-Me addresses the social dynamics of Chinese men in their mid-20s.

"Bālínghòu males are a huge cohort in the world's largest market, and they're now reaching their prime," said François Bancon, Division General Manager of product strategy and advanced planning at Nissan. "Clearly, their tastes will shape automotive trends worldwide for decades to come. So we believe it's important to listen with respect, and respond by putting dreams within their reach. That's why Friend-Me is our first proposition in an ongoing dialogue."

For a generation that grew up without siblings, leisure time shared with peers is treasured.

Edgy, but mannered enough to go with the flow
This car asserts an imposing presence - solidity and flowing lines give it an edgy muscularity.
With its exterior design, Friend-Me addresses a fine balance that middle-class Bālínghòu youth must heed. "We call our solution ‘Distilled Da Qi,'" said Taiji Toyota, Vice President of Nissan Design China. "'Da Qi is about casting an aura, about standing out, but at the same time going with the flow, fitting in. It's a question of balance, and we've worked to refine it right down to the essence. The result adds an entirely new and youthful dimension to the sedan category."

A low and wide stance with short front and rear overhang emphasizes more chunky, aggressive and sporty impression rather than authentic sedans.  Together with this challenging proportion, distinctive design aspects are presenting one of the new directions of Nissan appearance. The energetic and fluid momentum which arises from ‘V-motion' shaped grille streams through the hood to shoulder creates the impressive cadence with emotional aura.

The headlamps and rear combination lamps are accentuated by its unique boomerang shaped lighting signature.

The profile of the vehicle completely describes the progressive translation of ‘Distilled Da Qi'. The thin and light floating roof and kick-up shape around the C-pillar resonates well and produces sophisticated harmony.  Likewise, the Neon Gray exterior color - specially developed to appeal to tech-savvy youthful tastes - show its lines to full effect at night.

‘Oracle stone' empowers shared adventure
Inside, front and back, driver and passenger, all four seats are separate with the same high-tech style and status, because in this cabin all aboard are peers - equals. And all share the same information as the driver: speed, navigation, fuel remaining - everything.

Empowering all four adventurers is a unique center console stretching from the dash to between the rear seats - an iconic monolith in an onyx-black finish. Screens visible from each seat blend seamlessly with the surface, only becoming apparent as they display whatever contents the buzz of the moment demands. Whoever finds cool content can transfer it from his mobile to the on-board screens so all can share in the fun.

[VIDEO]: Football Greats Meet In New Orleans, Lend Muscle to Habitat Home Build

Former Heisman winners typically get together at least once a year in New York City for the ceremonial induction of the next trophy winner. Many also meet up at other times during the year because they have developed deep friendships. This camaraderie springs from the informal Heisman fraternity that has developed out of the players' love for football and shared interest of community service.

Nissan and Habitat for Humanity Work Together to Build a Real "Heisman House"

On most days, Aldon Lightfoot works with fellow longshoremen to load and unload ships at the Port of New Orleans. Today, Lightfoot worked alongside seven members of an elite class of athletes – Heisman Memorial Trophy winners – to build a Habitat home for his growing family.

The house of Aldon Lightfoot and Kimberly Jones and their three children will be built with help from a construction crew that includes celebrated Heisman Trophy winners John Lattner (1953, University of Notre Dame), Johnny Rodgers (1972, University of Nebraska), George Rogers (1980, University of South Carolina), Mike Rozier (1983, University of Nebraska), Danny Wuerffel (1996, University of Florida), Eric Crouch (2001, University of Nebraska) and Mark Ingram (2009, University of Alabama).

This unique collaboration grew out of existing relationships among Nissan and its partners Habitat for Humanity and the Heisman Trophy Trust. Together, the three organizations will team up with New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity to build a home in partnership with the Lightfoot family.
"Nissan is committed to improving the communities where our employees and customers live. Joining with Habitat for Humanity and the Heisman Trust, who share this mission of community service, is an ideal extension of our partnership with both organizations," said Nissan Marketing Vice President Jon Brancheau. "We are grateful to these athletes for joining in this one-of-a-kind partnership to build this house alongside a New Orleans family."

The "Heisman House" concept launched by Nissan in 2011 highlights its sponsorship of The Heisman Memorial Trophy, which is awarded annually to an outstanding college football player. The campaign gathers many of the most celebrated college football players of the last 30 years into the fraternal order of the Heisman House.

"We are proud to partner with our premier sponsor, Nissan, these former Heisman winners and Habitat for Humanity on this worthwhile project," said William J. Dockery, President of the Heisman Trust. "When most people hear the word Heisman, they immediately think of the trophy and college football. Many do not realize the mission of The Heisman Trust is to support the underprivileged and underserved. This is just another example of the work the Heisman Trust is doing all year long."
Partnering with New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity, the Lightfoot family will move into their new three-bedroom Habitat home in Central City from a one-bedroom apartment. The family includes a daughter, 8, two sons, ages 5 and 2 months, and a new baby on the way.

"We are grateful for Nissan's long-time support in helping to make affordable housing possible and for extending an opportunity for the Heisman Trophy Trust and athletes to get involved in our work," said Kymberly Wolff, senior vice president of Development at Habitat for Humanity International. "We look forward to continuing to partner together to help families fulfill their dreams of home ownership."

Nissan invites all its stakeholders to support Habitat for Humanity. Point-of-sale materials in dealerships and communications to consumers share information about its Habitat partnership. NissanUSA.com visitors can click through to Habitat's site to make a donation or find volunteer opportunities across the country. Grants from Nissan help sponsor Nissan volunteers who build homes through Habitat's annual Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project, provide Nissan vehicles to Habitat affiliates and support sustainability summits for affiliates and their communities.

Nissan's national partnership with Habitat dates to 2005, following hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Since 2006, Nissan has contributed more than $9 million to Habitat for Humanity. Nissan employees have helped to build more than 62 homes across the United States, and the company has donated 111 vehicles to support Habitat's mission.

Nissan LEAF Sales Booming in Norway and Other Nordic Countries

  • Nissan LEAF takes 1.7% of total Norway market
  • Award winning EV is second top seller in Norway's second city
  • EV drivers enjoy extensive set of benefits
  • Sales set to rise even higher in 2013

No country has sold more Nissan LEAF models per capita than Norway, with the world's first mass production electric vehicle taking 1.7 percent of all vehicle sales in 2012, its first full year on sale.

The country has embraced zero emission mobility like no other. The multi-award winning Nissan LEAF was Norway's 13th best selling new car with almost 2,298 examples registered in 2012.
More impressively yet, LEAF is the second best selling car overall in Trondheim, Norway's second largest city behind Oslo.
In total, more than 3,300 units have been sold in Norway since the battery-powered electric car went on sale in October 2011, and last year it was Nissan's second most popular model in the country with sales just 599 units behind Qashqai.

Part of the reason for its success is that Norway's five million inhabitants are among the most environmentally aware in the world and all have access to power created from renewable energy - hydroelectric plants generate 99 percent the country's electricity, more than in any other country in the world.

Sales of the Nissan LEAF have also been boosted by the incentives open to buyers and drivers of electric vehicles in Norway. There's no value added tax (VAT) on the car's purchase price and no road tax to pay.

Toll roads, tunnels and ferries are mostly free to EV drivers while any driver commuting to work in an EV in Norway is allowed to use bus lanes; a typical rush hour drive might take as little as 20 minutes in a Nissan LEAF compared to over an hour in a conventionally powered car.
The EV driver also benefits from free parking while dedicated EV parking spaces usually include access to a charging post -- and the electricity is free, of course.

Norway, in common with Nordic nations Sweden, Finland and Denmark, also has a growing network of Quick Chargers to allow EV drivers to tackle longer journeys. Quick chargers, which allow a depleted battery to be recharged to 80 percent of its capacity in as little as 30 minutes, can be found in shopping malls and car parks.

Reflecting the popularity of electric vehicles across the country, Norway is to receive 10 of the 400 chargers Nissan has pledged to give to European markets.

In addition, a link has recently been established with McDonalds Restaurants, which will be installing Quick Chargers in its car parks, allowing EV drivers to recharge their car's batteries while they recharge their own, a blend of Fast Food and Fast Charging.

Currently Norway has around 3,500 publicly accessible AC normal chargers and 65 publicly accessible DC quick chargers, and by the end of 2013 there will be more than 200 DC quick chargers across Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.

Norway has also seen some notable EV firsts, such as young mum Solveig Marie Ødegård who passed her driving test in 2012 behind the wheel of a driving school's Nissan LEAF. The real significance, however, is not simply that she passed her test in an EV, but that she has never driven a car powered by an internal combustion engine in her life.

Her first car? A new Nissan LEAF, of course.

Increasing EV sales mean there's a growing band of enthusiastic owners keen to compare notes with likeminded people so Norway has an active EV organization with a lively discussion forum.
Membership of the forum is included in the purchase price of every Nissan LEAF sold in the country.
Nissan LEAF also took center stage at a pioneering 'hands-on' exhibition, Future:Today, that opened in Oslo in October last year at the start of a seven week Nordic tour across Norway and Sweden. Special guests included more than 200 Nissan LEAF owners, many of whom regard themselves as ambassadors for the car.

As well as exhibits about Nissan LEAF, the forthcoming e-NV200 electric van and the benefits of zero emission mobility, Future:Today showcased the latest thoughts on city architecture and highlighted the city of the future -- one where EVs will be the only vehicles allowed on the roads.
There was also the opportunity for would-be owners to take LEAF test drives, as well as Nissan-backed live evening concerts for all-comers.

"We Norwegians live in a breathtakingly beautiful country and we are passionate in our desire to keep it beautiful. That's one reason why electric vehicles in general -- and Nissan LEAF in particular -- have become so popular," said Rune Haaland, president, EV Union.

"There is also a clear fiscal advantage to driving an EV as well as priority treatment on the roads. With an extended network of Quick Chargers being put in place we are confident that sales of Nissan LEAF will grow even more quickly in 2013," added Paal Simonsen, Nissan Country Manager in Norway.

Melloy Nissan Offers You This "Monday Maintenance Tip"!

Clean brake dust off regularly!

Brake dust contains all sorts of nasty stuff. If you leave it too long, the combination of road grime, moisture and heat from your brakes will bake it on to your wheels. Brake dust normally clings to wheels with static electricity so a damp sponge and clean cold water is the best way to get it off.
